Current Vacancies

Digital journalism intern

Contract: Internship, 3 month placement (with opportunities to extend).


Weekly hours: Negotiable, up to 35 hours per week.


Location: Remote.

Job Summary:

Our digital journalism internship offers opportunity to gain and apply the full array of skills in launching a first-of-its-kind digital journalism venture. Focussing on digital elements, you will have responsibilities across the breadth of the publication's activities, including editorial, marketing, tech, production and administration.

We offer a much more comprehensive, hands-on role than a typical internship. This is not about passively observing the workings of an organisation while lending a hand; it's an opportunity to be an active partner from its launch.

Responsibilities

Editorial:

Proof reading, branding and designing outputs including news articles, multimedia content, and the North African website.

Marketing:

Analysing market data, growing audiences on the North African website and social media channels, launching new channels and engaging marketing partners.

Digital & Tech:

Website design and online branding, ensuring the publication has access to the most suitable digital tools, ensuring these are used to maximum effect.

Content production:

Developing bespoke resources for North Africa researchers to be uploaded to the North African website by April 2022.

Research:

Taking on research tasks for a variety of commissions; these can cover anything from audience research to questions of strategy etc.

Administration:

Building and looking after databases, including on North Africa stakeholders, commentators and influencers, keeping files organised.

Candidate profile

The ideal candidate will have a specific interest in North Africa's political affairs and in starting a career in journalism. This is an unpaid position so we encourage you to check out our mission and editorial agenda before applying, and consider whether it is something you are personally committed to. 

The ideal candidate will be/have:

Strong digital skills -

Including in front end web development, use of Cpanel, graphic design and Photoshop.

Strong writing skills -

Being able to express themselves in a clear and concise manner.

A self-learner -

Able to quickly pick up new skills across multiple work streams.

A problem solver -

Able to take on challenging tasks and come up with workable solutions.

Strong people skills -

Being able to network and optimise relationships with a variety of publication stakeholders.

Fluency in Arabic, French, Spanish, Italian or German is a bonus.
